Wikipedia has gotten a bad reputation over the years, specifically because anyone can edit the pages. After an individual creates a user name they have the right to go onto pages on wikipedia and and add their own changes and corrections. Almost all information put on this page comes with a source log so people who use Wikipedia for information can go in and see where the information has come from. However, like many things in life there are rules since within Wikipedia there are high traffic and low traffic pages. A low traffic page is one that any user who creates an account, go on and edit. For example, puppetry and bird watching. Yet, there are many high traffic pages such as Facebook, and Cyberbullying. A high traffic page can be "locked"or "semi-locked." This may mean that an individual needs to have edited more then 10 pages and the account is more then four days old. This may be so individuals know how to use the website before they make any major changes to pages.
Since cyberbullying is a high traffic page, I wanted to start editing pages that were related to my collaborative research project, so I started with where cyberbullying all begins, "cyberspace." My edit is the last few sentences in the last paragraph. I used an article that talks about how cyberspace has a code of morals or ethics that individuals have to follow.
Once I completed the tasks necessary to be able to edit the actual cyberbullying page, I then had access to all of the sections that it has. My second edit is the last few sentences in the first paragraph of this section. I was able to use one of my sources for this section too.
I was able to use multiple sources for this edit since many of them focus on methods cyberbullies use when bullying. I edited the last few sentences in the second and third paragraphs.
Editing a Wikipedia page is an experience. I personally had done a project on editing these pages in the past. I had looked at high traffic and low traffic pages and made blatantly wrong edits to the pages, then watched them to see how long it took Wikipedia editors to correct them. Overall the site got corrected very quickly, and they also give offenders many notices saying they are close to being banned. It was interesting for a change, to see that my edits were left on these pages since I was contributing to the page in an informative and thoughtful manner.
